Sri Kanaka Maha Lakshmi Temple
LEGEND ABOUT THE TEMPLE:
The temple is very different when compared to other ones. No differences between the people like devotees and pujaris. Everyone can touch the Goddess and perform the pujas themselves.
beginning og kaliyug:
As per the history of temple: one Brahmin in order to stay with God while living, started to Kasi (formerly as Varanasi) by walk and reached burujupet. As it was afternoon by the time he reach the place, he had taken bath with the water in the nearby well and performing Suryanamaskar. By the time he listened a voice which is Goddess MahaLakshmi’s, asked him to place her statue which is inside the well but he rejected by telling he doesn’t pray anyone else The Lord Shiva and he is in urge reaching kasi so he cannot take the statue out form the well as he doesn’t have time for it. Goddess got angry and though of killing the Brahmin with the weapon in her left hand. But Lord in order to reduce her anger he had cut her left hand till the elbow. Shiva after becoming peaceful told that she will be showing her presence as Goddess Maha Lakshmi in Kaliyug.
ALL TIME OPEN:
The ruler of Visakhapatnam in their rule time, the statue was laid at a side. In 1912, while they were widening the roads, they have relocated the Goddess’s statue which created health issues to the people around there especially from Plague disease. Recognizing that the problems were because of relocating the statue, the rulers had placed the statue at the original place which reduced all the health issues immediately and by then all the people over there had started by praying the Goddess.
Initially, people thought of building the temple as the chances of darshan to everyone will reduce timely and mainly the pujari only will be allowed into the main temple and no other, they had left the plan of building it. There by, the Goddess is giving darshan outside itself.
Abhishekams will be performed in the early morning, afternoon and in the evening times daily with Panchamrutham (solution made of the combination of milk, curd, sugar, honey, ghee). Kumkumarchana, Suvarna Kumkumarchana is performed very grand on every Tuesday following Amavasya.
Until unless there is some very special pooja at the temple, we don’t see pujaris over there and so all the married ladies will present pasupu-kumkuma to the Goddess and the children till 3-4 years will be put into her lap for blessings. Unlike the devotees of Ayyappa and Durga Devi, the devotees put Kanakamahalakshmi Deeksha (mala) wearing green color clothes and will be rested out of it only on the Saturday followed by the last Thursday of Margashira masam.  In 1997, the Kanchi Peetam member Jayendra Saraswati visited the temple and inaugurated Shree Chakram in the temple.
Special Pujas in Margashiram:
Geetacharya told he is the Margashiram in all the months and so Shri Maha Lakshmi likes Margashiram and so all special pujas performed in that month here. Lakhs of ladies visit this temple specially on the Thursdays of Margashiram. At the end of this month(approximately January 5th), there will Rathayatra for the Goddess.
