the way to Srisailam from Uma Maheswaram you can see one of the most beautiful man made water storage tank - Bhramaramba Cheruvu and a temple in the middle of the wild and beautiful forest environment.
Inscriptions prove that this temple was built during the reign of Chandragupta Maurya. A unique feature of the Shiva Linga here is that it is white on one side and red on the other side. There are also the idols of Chandi, Subrahmanya, Virabhadra,
Kumara Swami and other Gods. This is called the northern gateway to Srisailam.
According to a legend, the Shiva Linga was drinking milk of a cow in the form of a serpent. The cowherd who realised this beat the snake. Thus it turned white; the red indicates the blood that came out from the snake.
This temple has been called as Guptamaheswaram or Guptha Mallikarjuna in the Sri Saila Khanda of Skanda Purana.
Inscriptions prove that this tank has been renovated in 16 AD thought the ruler of the place or the person who got the renovation done is not mentioned clearly.
The temple has a huge compound wall probably constructed in 16th – 17th Centuries A.D. Even today the place is inhabited by chenchus.
