Shikareswaram Temple is about 8kms from the main temple on a hillock. It is at a height of 2830 feet from the sea level. This temple is dedicated to Sikhareswara Swami.
To go to the temple you need to climb up the hill. There are well constructed steps to go to this temple. Up to a certain height you can go by your vehicle as well, which was constructed recently.
There is a Garbha griha, and a 16 pillared Mukhamanda in this temple. Once you come out there is a small Nandi overlooking the valley and it is considered very pious and good to touch and move this Nandi which is set on a huge boulder. Have a look at the nandi, a very well sculpted figure and with a very smooth surface. Inscriptions in this place tell us that the Reddy Kings have constructed the steps, the small tank for the convenience of the people.
This place gives a panoramic view of the entire valleys and the beautiful forest including the river Krishna. It is also said that from this Shikara if one can see the Gopuram of the Srisailam temple one will be blessed with Moksha ,i.e No rebirth. This is clearly explained in The Skanda Purana. It is also believed that the Late Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, saw the Gopuram of the Srisailam temple from the top of the Shikara when he visited this place and soon passed away and attained Moksha.
