Mangalagiri is one of the eight important Mahakshetrams (sacred places) in India. It is also oldest Vaishnavite Temples in the entire South India, whose presiding deity is Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. This temple was built by the Zamindar Sri Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu during the period 1807-1809.
According to a legend, the mountain on which the temple is located in the form of an elephant. This holy placed was visited by Hrasva Srungi, son of King Pariyatra. When his father came to bring him back to his kingdom, Hrasva Srungi took the shape of an elephant and became the abode of Lord Vishnu, known as Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy.
At this site the temple of Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy has been built. Towards the right of steps that are provided to reach the temple, there is a stone inscription by Sri Krishna deva Raya of Vijayanagar. On going beyond, the foot prints of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu can be seen. Further up is the temple of Lord Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy
